Therapeutic

bacteria.
It is used to;
Treatment of moderate to
severe appendicitis ,
uncomplicated and
complicated skin and skin
structure infections, endo
metritis, pelvic
inflammatory disease, or
nosocomial or community-
acquired pneumonia cause
d by piperacillin-resistant,
piperacillin/tazobactam-
susceptible, beta-
lactamase-producing
bacteria
Contraindicated to
patient with;
1. Hypersensitivity to
piperacillin,
tazobactam,
penicillins,
cephalosporins, or
beta-lactamase
inhibitors such as
clavulanic acid and
sulbactam.
2. Kidney failure;
pregnancy (category
B), lactation. Safety
and efficacy in
children <12 y are
not established.
3. Used cautiously in
patient with other
drug allergies,
especially to
cephalosporins and
in those with
bleeding tendencies,
uremia or
hypokalemia.
The adverse effects of Piperacillin +
Tazobactam are the ff;
1. Headache
2. Insomnia
3. Constipation
4. Diarrhea
5. Nausea
6. Thrombocytopenia
7. Chest pain
8. Hypertension
9. Tachycardia
Nursing responsibilities and patient
teachings;
1. Obtain history of
hypersensitivity to penicillin
cephalosporins, or other drugs
prior to administration.
2. Lab tests: C&S prior to firs
dose of the drug; start drug
pending results. Monitor
hematologic status with
prolonged therapy (Hct and
Hgb, CBC with differentia
and platelet count).
3. Monitor patient carefully
during the first 30 min after
initiation of the infusion for
signs of hypersensitivity.
4. Report rash, itching, or other
signs of hypersensitivity
immediately.
5. Report loose stools or
diarrhea as these may indicate
pseudomembranous colitis.
6. Do not breast feed while
taking this drug withou
consulting physician.
