1.2 Basic Statistics for Exercise Science How Are Facts Established -Did you really want to take a course in statistics? -We now live in the “information age” -We now live in the “information analysis age” -8/20/14 Gallop poll says only 33% support common core standards -8/19/14 Harvard's Kennedy School polls shows support at 53% -Science – Probability Statements -Is there really global warming? -Compare daily/seasonal temperatures to see the averages are increasing -If averages are similar, temperatures are just randomly fluctuating. -If averages are increasing, there may be a causal relationship Philosophy of Science Issues -Science does not deal with certainty. -A fact becomes a fact, when to believe otherwise in a world based upon probability, becomes foolhardy. -Statistics – An Analytical Tool Making decisions based upon numerical information Making decisions based upon probability of events being chance or non- chance happenings -Experimental Design A way of thinking Ensures the validity of the data & their (plural is correct!)
