Globalization and Gender I believe that globalization is the word we use to describe how different cultures relate with each other, and the changes we have made over time to make our relationships between countries better. In the book “Globalization: A Very Short Introduction.”, Manfred Steger (2003) defines globalization as: a multidimensional set of social processes that create, multiply, stretch, and intensify worldwide social interdependencies and exchanges while at the same time fostering in people a growing awareness of deepening connections between the local and the distant.(p.13). Technology has had a major effect on globalization. It gave us the ability to instantly talk to someone in a different city, state or Country for the first time in history. It made business easier to communicate with other businesses and 2

people in other countries. It has contributed in many positive ways, and it has made it easy to access media and other cultures. It also has negative effects as Jill Bystydzienski (2002:1) points out in her article “Contradictory effects of globalization on women: problems, challenges and opportunities” “technology is too frequently used as a medium for imposing North American and Western European ideas and lifestyles on the rest of the world.” Patriarchy is described as a society that is three things: male dominated, male-identified, and male-centered and in the book “ The Gender Knot: Unraveling Our Patriarchal Legacy” by Alan Johnson (1997:5) .
