10/24/07 Homework 1. Yes; Stasz did do a good job making a case for better farm policy; she took a new angle in presenting much of the information the Environmental Defense website provided. Stasz really emphasized just the magnitude and importance that this bill will have on consumers, farmers, and the environment. She made interesting cases in proposing how agriculture impacts water quality and wildlife habitat; many of the numbers/statistics she used were figures that I could not believe (eg- 54% of US rivers, lakes, and bays are impaired and agriculture accounts for almost 40% of the habitat destruction in our planet). I did feel that Stasz overemphasized the inefficiency of the current subsidy policies, though she did make valuable points. I felt that Stasz could have talked a little more about how American Farm Policy affects farmers in other countries, instead of adding such emphasis on subsidies. Overall, Stasz was very informative, and she helped to raise awareness of just how important the farm bill is. 2.
