Irene's grandmasupports her through her stage of life into adulthood, and in the end, she and Curdie arereunited. The reader, on the other hand, is never sure whether the grandmother exists, and it is this doubt that leads the reader to wonder if she is a representation of a powerwithin Irene that drives her to do whatever she does. The grandmother's house containsmultiple aspects from fairy tales. They've both left what's comfortable and known in search of a place they'd never heardof before. Because Irene's condition is so similar to that of the sleeping beauty, a senseof danger weighs over the reader's head. A visit to Little Red Riding Hood'sgrandmother's residence is also hinted at.
