Unformatted text preview: Stephanie Russo April 2 2008 Comp 130.03 Inherit the Wind In the play Inherit the Wind , the accused Bertram Cates is convicted of teaching his students atheist concepts. Inherit the Wind is based on the Scopes Trial, but is not an exact account. The Scopes Trial took place in Dayton Tennessee, and the characters were different as well as the dialogue and setting. In the town of Hillsboro, where Inherit the Wind takes place, religion is everything. The entire town consists of Christians and the Bible is the basis for life. In one of his classes, Cates mentions Darwinism instead of the biblical creation stories. This is illegal in the town of Hillsboro, where creationism is the only concept allowed to be taught. Rachael Brown, Cates friend, is also a teacher at the same school. Rachael firmly believes in creationism and the Bible, and her father is a reverend. Rachael insists that Cates made a mistake and that he needs to admit it and move on. Cates does not believe that he was wrong, and persists with the trial. In he needs to admit it and move on....
