Wine in Society What are some of the positive health related issues of moderate beverage consumption? Lowers cholesterol, less risk of developing heart disease, reduce risk of heart attack What are some of the negative health related aspects of abusive consumption? Motor functions, semi-voluntary reflexes, and vital functions can be affected and compromised. There is a suppressive effect on sexual performance, inhibition of restorative sleep, effects on cognition (impacts concentration and memory recall) What is considered moderate consumption? What is abusive consumption? Moderate consumption depends on the weight of the person and the amount of time in which they are consuming alcohol. A male who weighs 140 lbs can have 1 drink in 1 hour while a male who weighs 200 lbs can consume 5 drinks in 3 hours. The scale is less for women. Abusive consumption has to do with people that drink in ways that recurrently cause problems or engage in risk-taking. What are the signs of dependency?
