9/22/15, 3:38 AM W.W. Norton StudySpace - Flashcards Page 1 of 2 Term Description culture The values, norms, and material goods characteristic of a given group. Like the concept of society, the notion of culture is widely used in sociology and the other social sciences (particularly anthropology). Culture is one of the most distinctive properties of human social association. (page 41) values Ideas held by individuals or groups about what is desirable, proper, good, and bad. What individuals value is strongly influenced by the specific culture in which they happen to live. (page 41) norms Rules of conduct that specify appropriate behavior in a given range of social situations. A norm either prescribes a given type of behavior or forbids it. All human groups follow definite norms, which are always backed by sanctions of one kind or another—varying from informal disapproval to physical punishment. (page 41) material goods The physical objects that a society creates; these influence the ways in which people live. (page 42) instinct A fixed pattern of behavior that has genetic origins and that appears in all normal animals within a given species. (page 43)

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
