A few of the Major Conclusions from a recent Surgeon General’s report: A. More than 60% of American adults are not regularly physically active. B. Nearly half of American youths 12-21 years of age are not vigerously active on a regular basis. 1. Developing your Plan: a) Assess current level of activity and fitness. b) Set goals -General, long term -Specific, short term c) Select Activities -Develop each of the five health-related components of fitness. d) Set target intensity, duration and frequency (for cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance and strength, flexibility and body composition. -Cardiovascular endurance aa) 20-60 minutes ~Aerobic Exercises- Low intensity, long duration. Fifty percent of muscle mass needs to be involved. ~Anaerobic Exercises- High intensity, short duration. *Run the straights, walk the curves to recover heart rate on track. bb) Remember value of threshold heart rate. ~55-65% low fitness
