States #2 video lecture.Modern Day sovereignty issues:Causing conflict and cooperation.192 sovereign states.East Timor is going to be 193A) Likely new states in our time; Palestine (issues), Greenland (peaceful),B) Possibly future states: Scotland, Quebec,C) Violently trying to be a state: Chechenia (about a decade), Basque ethnicgroup, Transnistria, Kurdistan,.D) Can never be states due to P5: Taiwan, Kosovo, south Ossetia, andAbkhazia.Taiwan – China is on P5 and vetoes any movement the UN has to fullyrecognize it. Never ever happen; china getting stronger and nobody wants tomess with them; don’t want to piss them off.Kosovo – provenience within sovereign state Serbia. When former Yugoslaviaimplodes in early 19 century. Turn to 4 then 5 then 6 independent sovereignstates; Serbia is remnant core of Yugoslavia. Serbs conducted genocide inBosnia. U.S and NATO involved in that mess in 1995. NATO and US gotinvolved directly in 199 when Slobodan Milosevic (former Serbian president).US bombed Serbia to stop picking on them; here to stabilize it and protect itfrom the Serbs. Serbia got mad and Russia got mad as well; cant go intosovereign state and crave a piece of it out and make it a sovereign state.2008 February Kosovo declares independence. 69 countries recognized it.Serbs and Russia got pissed because they were lied to. Set a precedent. Chinais #1 fan of sovereignty because they don’t want people to mess with them;they also decline it.They don’t want ethnic minorities in china to rise up likeTibet and Taiwan.
