CAN EU BE A MULTI-CULTURAL PROJECT European Union started off as an economic project but in the last 30 years, it converted into a politic and cultural community. European Union only consists of different groups of Christianity. This union of Christianity results in sharing similar cultural backgrounds. Turkey as a Muslim candidate and Muslim cultural background has the potential to bring the largest diversity in history of the Union. Turkey would bring the culture of the east and will vary Europe’s monolithic Christian establishment. Turkey’s position poses the question nowadays in the agenda if EU can be a multi-cultural project. In this paper the answer to this question is revealed by analyzing Turkey’s future membership. What is multiculturalism? How Europeans define this term is ambiguous actually. According to Gottfried, “Multiculturalism is the blueprint followed by the recent architects of Western foreign policy as they try to build a more virtuous world. The term designates a cluster of attitudes associated with alleged victims of white Christian bourgeois civilization. Multiculturalists speak incessantly about tolerance, but not everyone is to be assigned the same expressive and cultural rights. Those who are awarded victim status by virtue of a group affiliation have preferential rights to self- identity, whereas those identified with oppression, such as Southern whites in America, are accorded no right to a sense of pride in a shared past. This bizarre doctrine of selective tolerance must be distinguished from the mere coexistence of different ethnic groups in the same political territory. What ideological multiculturalists prescribe is not

ethnic pluralism but the gradual dilution or overthrow of the established majority culture .” But on the other hand, Multiculturalism is not avoidable in EU. In important members of EU as France and Britain, the multiracial and multicultural nature are intrinsically linked to their histories of slavery, colonization, economic and ideological exploitation and forced migration.(Ankara Papers 2004). But as Greece entered to the Union, the created homogenous state is now facing major social changes. Greece has developed from a country of immigration to a country receiving immigrants (legal and illegal), repatriates (mainly from the new democracies within former Soviet territories) and refugees. This new social structure led Greece to form a more multicultural identity. (Ankara Papers 2004) Wolfgang Schäuble in his article “Talking Turkey” in the magazine Foreign Affairs discusses “They may still think that Europe is homogeneous. But times have changed. Today's Europe is a rich mosaic of cultures, ethnicities, and religions. It is a community of values, in which democracy is strengthened by diversity. More than a political and economic bloc, the union is a dynamic democracy-building project. In order to join it, countries must embrace far-reaching political and economic reforms.” Mr.
