What were blacks required to do upon entering Ohio or Indiana? - Blacks were required to post a bond of $500 as a guarantee against becoming a public charge and as a pledge of good behavior. Threats to racial purity. 3. What percent of the southern population were black? - In 1860 over four million blacks were in the south roughly 35% of the population 4. What did slaveholders do to ensure their slaves would stay? - To manage slaves masters used various methods sometimes they used kindness. “Best method of managing Negroes, is to love them” but they also believed that strict discipline was essential and that power had to be based on fear. Masters would try and brainwash their slaves into believing that they were racially inferior and racially suited for bondage. Kept illiterate and ignorant they were told they were incapable of caring for themselves. They relied of the power of fear to hold the slaves in check. Masters were convinced that slaves
