Biology 111, Principles of Biology Lecture Outlines Mutations MUTATION: a change in the sequence of DNA True or False? Most mutations are harmful. False. Most mutations are actually harmless. They have no effect on phenotype. Why? Only those mutations that occur within protein-coding (or function-coding) regions of DNA have the potential to result in a mutant phenotype. Less than 10% of all human DNA encodes proteins (exons). Greater than 90% of all human DNA may be mutated without changing a protein Types of Mutations: 1. Small: single nucleotide change (POINT Mutation) 2. Large: deletion or chromosome rearrangement Two common classes of point mutations: 1. Base (Nucleotide) Substitution: a change in one nucleotide 2. Base (Nucleotide) Insertion or deletion: addition of an extra nucleotide, or removal of a single nucleotide from the normal DNA sequence Base Substitution Mutations (see Figure 17.24): Three different effects on the polypeptide sequence may result
