An important goal is tobroaden understanding of both the purposesand the tools of assessment. The popular conception of assessment isrestrictedtoevaluatingindividualstudentperformancebytestsdesigned to determine, at the end of a unit of time or instruction, whatthe student has already learned.But assessment should also be used during the learning process toenable teachers to monitorstudents’understanding and to modifycurriculum and instruction, as well as to assess the effectiveness ofschool programs. Assessment of individual student performance shouldbe a continuous process that involves many types of assessmentactivity.Students should play active roles in assessmentso that eachassessment experience is also an educational experience.
