Chapter 3 Study Guide Vocabulary Theory – a framework that can be used to comprehend and explain events Sociological theory – set of principals and definitions that tell how societies operate and how people relate to each other -3 Theories Dominate Sociology 1. The Functionalist Theory 2. The Conflict Theory 3. The Symbolic Interactionist Theory Function – the contribution of a part to the larger system and its effect on other parts of the system Manifest function – intended, recognized, expected, or predictable consequences of a social system Latent function – the unintended, recognized, unanticipated, or unpredicted consequences Dysfunctions – disruptive consequences of a social system Manifest Dysfunction – expected dysfunctions to order and stability that a part causes in some segment of a system Latent Dysfunction – unintended negative consequences (from dysfunctions in the system) Façade of Legitimacy – an explanation that members in dominant groups give to justify their actions Ideologies – fundamental ideas that support the interests of dominant groups Symbol – any kind of physical phenomenon (word, object, color, sound, feeling, odor, movement, taste) to which people assign a meaning or value) Constricted Reality – our experience in the world arises out of the interaction that takes place among people in the course of their daily life Key Concepts Functionalist Perspective -Asks key questions such as: 1. Why does a particular arrangement exist?
