Plant/People Interactions Botany is the study of plants. Plant structures Roots are almost always the below ground portion of the plant. It is the first structure to emerge from the seed. The main function of the root is to absorb water however they also anchor the plant to the ground. Modified roots grass roots are good for preventing erosion tropical trees have buttresses o start at the stem and spread which helps to anchor the tree in a broad base way, not simply by burrowing into the ground food storage o Biennial crop plants—filled with excess food Stems are the above ground portion of the plant. Its main function is to support the leaves for maximum photosynthesis, support flowers to attract pollinators and conduct food and water from the root to the leaves and stems. Modified Stems store water support o vines have tendrils in order to help support the stem food storage o Bulbs or tubers are full of food protected underneath the soil
