Gun Control2 and many changes have been made on the regulations of manufacturing, transporting and selling of firearms in the US (Lott, n.d). After the attack of Sandy Hook Elementary school on December 14, 2012 in Newtown, the lawmakers are again looking into reforms that will achieve more security. Consequently, statistics has shown that cases of gun crime are higher in the US than Europe. Consequently, this is because more guns available to civilians in the US than in Europe (Frank, 2013). The 2007 statistics have shown that there we about 88.8 guns per 100 civilians in the United States compared to 30.3 in Germany. One of the significant factors contributing to the high number of guns on private hands is the Second Amendment interpretation of the right to own firearms. The amendment of the constitution that was passed in 1791 declared that regulated and organized militia who provided security to the State were entitled a right bear and keep firearms. Additionally, the phrase has raised a heated debate to date and one side argues that possession of firearms is equivalent to self defense and individuals should have guns in order to protect themselves (ProCon.org, 2014). . On the other hand the opposing side argues that the amendment was written in order create a standing army and further argue that the US has got a strong army to counter external invasion and functioning police force to counter crimes. In this scenario, there is no need of private ownership of firearms. According to a report published by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), there were about 294 million firearms that were in circulation in the US. The

Gun Control3 research conducted in 2005 further pointed out that amongst the American adults who owned guns 58% of them used it for hunting, 67 % for protection against crime and 66% for target shooting Coalition (n.d). The efforts of modern gun control started in 1968 with the gun control act which granted the state and the federal governments more powers to gun control in order to curb increasing cases of crime. The act banned the sell of firearms to persons under the age of 18 years (Gun control, 2014). Moreover, the Brady Handgun violence Prevention act of 1993 required the purchaser of the firearm from a federal firearm licensee to have a complete audit of the background before the sell of the arm.
