Uncertain VisionThere is an old saying that states “Seeing is believing”; however this is certainly notalways true in every circumstance. Both Sophocles and Shakespeare entertained the idea thatwhat you see is not always as it appears. Sophocles’Oedipus the Kingand Shakespeare’sOthello, The Moor of Veniceboth carry out the theme of uncertain vision. In each of these storiesthe protagonists are blind about their situation. Between the two different story lines there aremajor differences. In Oedipus the King, the protagonist’s flaw is his own inability to see the truthright in front of his eyes. In Othello, his inability to see the truth is mainly brought on by the liesand deceit that Iago imposes. Both of these protagonists cannot see the truth that is right in frontof them and will eventually lead to their own downfalls.BothOedipus the KingandOthello, The Moor of Veniceare true classic tragedies in thesense they both present great men destined to their downfall.By definition, both Oedipus andOthello present a role of a tragic hero. Aristotle’s definition of a tragic hero states, a tragic hero isthe protagonist, the hero or chief character of a tragedy, is a person of “high estate,” apparently aking or queen or other member of a royal family.
