Unformatted text preview: The effect of salt on the boiling time of water Our purpose of the experiment was to see if the boiling time of water was affected by the amount of salt added to the water. If we found a difference, we wanted to see if it was significantly different, and how so? Experimental Design We used 8 treatment groups and one control group. No salt was added to the control group. The eight treatment groups consisted of adding 1/8 tsp, tsp, tsp, 1 tsp, 1 tbsp, cup, cup, and 1 cup of salt to a quart of water. We used simple random sampling output from MINITAB in order to assign a treatment group to each sample of water. Experimental Design cont. The experiment was repeated 5 times with each treatment group and 5 times with the control group, equaling 45 samples. We then recorded the time in seconds it took for the water to increase from 100 degrees to 212 degrees for each of the 5 trials in each treatment group. Experimental Design In order to measure our variables, we used measuring cups to measure out the correct amounts of salt. We used stopwatches to measure the amount of time it took for the water to boil. In order for our measurements to be reliable, we used the same measuring cups, the same brand of iodized salt, the same stove, the same thermometer, and the same stopwatch. By doing this, we can be assured that there are no confounding variables present. Treatment...
