The events at Abu-Ghraib Prison in Iraq in 2004 are clearly controversial and we will turn  our attention to the social influences on attitudes in that context.   Process: 1. In the 1970s social psychologist Phillip Zimbardo conducted a simulation of  prison life to examine role playing behavior using students in the roles of  prison guards and prisoners.  This study became known as the Stanford  Prison Experiment, which Myers describes on pages 142 and 143.
