Final Exam Questions DSoc 1101, Fall, 2008 1. Race is an important feature of social stratification in the United States, and is correlated with labor market earnings, family income, and family wealth. Provide an explanation for why this is the case, and develop this explanation in terms of the empirical & historical data on social stratification. In your answer be sure to carefully define race, and indicate which groups fit this definition. Your answer may focus primarily on only two groups. 2. Social class is a controversial concept in the social sciences, with some scientists claiming that social class boundaries are strong because the wealthy exert influence over key institutions (financial institutions, corporations, politics, and the media) to perpetuate their class power and privileges. Other scientists believe that class is not a particularly salient dimension of social life, and that class is simply one dimension among many (e.g., race and gender).
