States of consciousness Consciousness -our awareness of ourselves and our environment -selective attention - our awareness focuses on only a limited aspect of all that we experience -inattentional blindness - failure to see a visible objects when our attention is directed elsewhere Circadian Rhythm -Your body's biological clock; regular body rhythms -for example, cortisol and adrenaline are highest in the morning and lower throughout the day. -most of our circadian rhythms are times to sunlight and darkness. (jet-lag) Sleep -5 Stages of sleep -People go through a full cycle of sleep every 90 minutes -Stage 1 -fantastic images that resemble hallucinations -sensation of floating or falling weightlessly -Stage 2 -relax more deeply -sleep talking starts to occur -Stage 3 -transition stage into deep sleep -Stage 4 -enter a deep sleep -it's hard to awaken someone -individuals will sleep walk -children wet the bed -REM sleep (rapid eye movement) -When you dream -Once here you are paralyzed
