9.21.5 Chapter 6 – Color Vision I) Color Purposes: i.Creates an emotional/aesthetic impact 1. Ex – blue à calming, black/red à intimidating for team colors ii.Helps people determine the edibility of food iii.Helps people detect objects from the background 1. Used in attracting mates and camouflage (breaking up foreground) iv.Helps in discrimination between objects 1. Reds and yellows grab our attention (ads use this) 2. Helps us diagnose different physical ailments II) Physiology of Color: a. Newton – discovered that prisms break up light into its spectrum, its component parts of different colors i.He named seven colors, being that seven was a popular religious number ii.He said that white wasn’t pure (it was made up of component parts that were impure), which went again church doctrine b. Cones – are able to isomerize different wavelengths depending on their type i.Long Cones – able to isomerize long wavelengths (red) ii.Medium Cones – able to isomerize medium wavelengths (green) iii.Small Cones – able to isomerize short wavelengths (blue, violet)
