Hist 259 Professor Hyams 10/27/08 Crusading Bull of Pope Eugene III 1. Overall, the Bull’s arguments seem quite persuasive in their attempt to encourage people to  go on Crusade.   He makes many references to the success of the First Crusade and the  achievements which the Christians had fulfilled their before their time.  He also makes many  religious references and states that the Crusade will be a war of liberation.   Also, the same  remission of sins that was offered on the First Crusade is offered here as well.  Finally, the  assurances made by the pope on the behalf of the lay people concerning the protection of  property and dept among other things provides great incentive to go on Crusade. 2. The Bull’s call to action most definitely indicates that Pope Eugene III desired an armed  pilgrimage.   There are many references to fighting which include: calls to emulate the First  Crusade; the need to defend what their fathers gained by the outpouring of blood; mention of  the deeds of Matthias; and the mention that the lords should concern themselves with the  purchase of arms and horses.  The Bull also indicates that the entire Crusading Group will not  be made up of solely military forces but will also be a pilgrimage.  In the writing there is mention
