Whitney McNamara Dr. Ross Harrrison Pol and Govt of Middle East Midterm 3/3/08 It is not news that the Arab world today struggles with validation domsetically and abroad to run its respective countries sucessfully and with respect. The combination of rapid modernization, implications of centuries of unstable imperialistic rule, and muddled identity are just some of the road blocks that prevent the East of gaining legitimacy. Most political scientists would argue that there can be no legitimacy until there is a democratization of these Arab states. To be taken seriously in this modern age, participatory _____ in a stable government institution which is receptive to the mass participation is imperative. Legitimcy is important for a myriad of reasons. Respect and validation are only received when a 'part of population is willing to accept authority, policies, norms or rules of its leaders and instituions.' For a country to maintain efficacy it must rely on a control system of symbols and coercian. Legitimacy relates to the control system, and effects the ability of states to control their people and also their neighbors. While control brought on by scare tactics and short lived dreams may work temporarily, a legitmite and successful government results from stability which creates a harmonious relationship between ruler and the ruled. Furthermore, a stable government is what leads to legitimacy. Hudson also says that "a governmental system and leadership that is genuinely national, that partkes in the nations history, that acts in accordance with society's values, and that protects its broadest concerns is likely to be regarded as legitimate." Hudson says that three preqreuisites for political modernity is authority, identity, and equality. People in a given nation must feel a sense of political community which does not conflict with 'subnational or supranational communal identifications.' Authorattative political structures in which people feel are efficient and right is a way to instill hope and optimism into the people in the participatory government, Without authorative political structures, or poltiical
