It has been said by some Western scholars that the impact of external powers on politics of the Middle East has been grossly exaggerated. Write an essay in which you discuss this statement. Elaborate on what impact, if any, external powers have had on political development (political awareness, identity, efficacy and legitimacy) in the Middle East. Be sure to use examples to answer this question. Impact external powers has had on political development etc, political awareness, identity, efficacy, legitimacy External powers grossly impacted the politics of the Middle East from a early time. From the Ottoman empire to European rule to to decades of bipolar world politics under the U.S. and U.S.S.R, saying the impact of external powers on politics of the Middl East is exaggerated is to ignore the past centuries of colonialism and indirect rule the Arab world has been under from other powers such as Great Britain, France, and Russia just to name a few. Howeer, whether the impact these external influences had on politics was a positive or negative one is another argument entirely. From indirectly increasing political awareness to alluding a disarray of borders and identities, and lowering efficacy and legitimacy by taking away the Arab countries independence, these imperialistic countries affected political development in a big way. Identity One of the biggest factors outside powers inflicted on the Middle East was the constant changing of identities. From carving up the territory, to passing on their culture, it was hard for any group of people to feel completely unified. As early as the 18th century,
