Chapter 11 Senses
Classifications of Senses
1. List the two classifications of senses: general senses and special senses.
General Senses
1. Describe general senses: those detected by rather simple, microscopic receptors that are
widely distributed throughout the body in the skin, muscles, tendons, joints, and other
internal organs of the body. They are responsible for such sensation as pain, temperature,
touch, pressure, and body position.
2. General senses are responsible for such sensations as: the special senses are those detected by
receptors that are grouped in specific areas and associated with complex structures that
facilitate these senses. The sense of smell, taste, vision, hearing, and equilibrium are
considered special senses.
Special Senses
1. Individual receptor cells are identified structurally according to whether they are:
encapsulated or encapsulated.
2. Sensory receptor cells are also classified functionally by the type or modes of stimuli that
activate them, list the different classifications: photoreceptors, chemoreceptors, pain
receptors, thermoreceptors, and mechanoreceptors.
3. Photoreceptors are sensitive to: change in intensity or color of light, as in vision.

Distribution of General Sense Receptors
