Week 4 DiscussionHist-2005-2, World History: 1900-1945The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophia was the first ingredient of what would become World War I. The time period leading up to the war and all the events that took place could be summed up as school yard power struggle. Everyone wanted to be the most powerful, have the biggest military, and ally with those who offered the most profit from a future war. (Chapter 7, Pg. 99) Peace was a word that was lightly used, almost as if it just had to be mentioned to say that it was mentioned but of course no one was planning on any peaceful solutions, "...military considerations afforded diplomacy little time to reach a peaceful settlement." (Chapter 7,Pg. 99) Then you had countries that were neutral, like Belgium, getting caught in the middle of two powers.As Germany planned to launch against France, Russia joined with France and drove the Germans back.
