Week 5 Assignment Hist-2005-2, World History: 1900-1945 The 14 points was the 1918 statement by President Woodrow Wilson that the “Great War” was being fought for the moral cause and for postwar peace in Europe. Wilson directly addressed what he thought to be the causes for the war and it was a formulated ideological justification for the United State’s entry into the war. Basically the speech laid out a policy of free trade, open agreements, democracy and self determination. (Chapter 11, Pg. 156). Woodrow’s speech and 14 points served as a significant tool for the propaganda of peace and ethics, and more importantly to motivate the allied troops. The design of the points were to purposely undermined the Central Powers’ will to continue and also formed the basis of the armistice signed between the Central Powers, the Allies and the surrender of Germany. Some belligerents gave general indications of the aims, but most kept their post war goals to themselves.
