Political Science 020 March 18, 2008 Globalization and Technology Internet 1960's military technology built by the US Defense Department's Advanced Research Project Agency -- ARPAnet o in the event of nuclear attack, government officials could communicate with each other because the network was decentralized and had many nodes 1980s: transferred to National Science Foundation -- NSFnet -- and expanded to other US government agencies and universities, and then transferred to private companies late 1980s: explosion of Internet o computers becoming more and more powerful o Tim Berners-Lee of European Particle Physics Laboratory (CERN) in Switzerland creates WWW software and establishes common user protocols for addresses, languages, file transfer and web browers the massive growth of Internet is primarily in First World and especially in the financial sector information as state power: o benign view: states want access to information knowing what's going on in world & elsewhere -- CNN has more foreign offices than US has embassies o make war less horrific and more 'fun' like a video game controlled access to war sites so no negative footage is recorded
