Introduction to Local Area Networks: Auto-Negotiation ProtocolThe positive progression of civilization is largely dependent upon the sharing of information. As such, the development of innovative techniques that improve upon the acquisition and distribution of information are imperative to contemporary society. Although the internet has greatly increased how information is queried between sources, the utilization of local area networks (LAN) is still a relevant technology that requires appropriate discussion. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the LAN auto-negotiation protocol and describe how the protocol enables a user to connect to a network. To accomplish this, peer-reviewed literature will be examined to better understand the purpose and modern implication of auto-negotiation.Auto-NegotiationAccording to Beasley & Nilkaew (2013), auto-negotiation is an Ethernet procedure where two communicating devices choose common transmission parameters. For instance, when a user attempts to communicate with a novel device over an LAN, each device will determine the optimal performance parameters of the other device to ensure that the highest performance transmission mode is chosen. Allowing the devices to auto-negotiate before the transmission of any data occurs
