Maria Veronica Macias Hedda Gabler-Ibsen Act Analysis Act Four Characters found in the act:Hedda Gabler, George Tesman, Judge Brack, Mrs. Tesman, Mrs. Elvsted. Directions: Respond to each query found in the chart.Use quotes to support and exemplify. * What theme(s) are revealed during thisact? One:The expectation for a married woman tobecome pregnant. Two:The negative effects of romanticizingsuicide.Three:Having power over other people.Quote(s) and analysis (how and why) …. 1.Hedda has an expectation to become pregnant and Mrs. Tesman is eager to remind her every time she is there. For example, Mrs. Tesman would hint by saying “here in the house of life”; “And here, too, but there’ll be sewing soon, I imagine. But a far different kind, praise God”; “Well, thank god, in this house as well, there soon ought to be work that an old aunt can turn her hand to.”; “And perhaps Hedda has something to tell you”. Hedda is not happy with Mrs. Tesman’s suggestions, she not only feels pressured but uncomfortable because she is not the stereotypical feminine woman she is expected to be. Her aversion towards the idea of pregnancy is so prevalent that when she tells Tesman, she can’t say she’s pregnant and instead hints at it, “No, no you ask your aunt Julie. She’s the one who can tell you.” Hedda does not want a baby, she wants a life filled with adventure and thrill, the life Eilert had before he took his own life. 2.Hedda was the person who suggested that Løvborg should take his own life “beautifully.” When she finds out that Løvborg has shot himself in the chest, everyone is in deep despair and worry for him while Hedda says “I’m saying there’s beauty in all of this.”; “Eilert Løvborg’s settled accounts with himself. He’s had the courage to do what had to be done”; “I mean for me, it’s liberating to know that there can still be free and courageous action in this world. Something that shimmers with spontaneous beauty.” Rather than feeling sorrow or regret for inciting Løvborg she is obsessed with the idea of taking control over his life through suicide. However, the suicide brings her scandal which Hedda despises. Through Løvborg’s suicide she gains power over him, however, she loses that power when she realizes that she might be part of a scandal, which leads her to take control of her life by killing herself. 3.Hedda’s reaction to Løvborg’s death prompted Brack to question Hedda. “Hedda goes over by the stove and sits on one of the taborets. Brack stands over her, leaning on the armchair.” Brack’s body language is an
indication of power over her, which he does. While Brack cross-examines her, Hedda breaks and the judge tells her he knows what he did but he won’t tell, “I won’t abuse my position” and Hedda responds, “all the same I’m in your power”. Hedda now does not have power over her husband, who is now working with Mrs.
