ADHD ATTENTIONDEFICIT / HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER A NEUROLOGICAL DIFFERENCE WITHIN THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM, SPECIFICALLY THE BRAINSTEM AND CORTEX MOST COMMON NEUROBIOLOGICAL DISABILITY CHARACTERIZED BY: Poor attention span Impulsivity Hyperactivity ADD OR ADHD? ADHD IS SPLIT INTO THREE SUBTYPES: ADHD, PREDOMINATELY INATTENTIVE TYPE ADHD, MOSTLY HYPERACTIVEIMPULSIVE TYPE ADHD, COMBINED TYPE HOW IS IT DIAGNOSED?
INATTENTION Failing to give close attention to details and makes careless mistakes in schoolwork, work , or other activities Does not seem to listen when spoken to directly Does not follow through on instructions and fails to finish schoolwork or chores Difficulty organizing tasks and activities Avoids, dislikes, or is reluctant to engage in doing stuff that involves a sustained mental effort Loses things that are needed for tasks or activities (ex. Pencils, homework, or textbooks. Easily distracted by the little things Forgetful while doing daily activities Hyperactivity Fidgets with hands or feet Squirms in the seat Often leaves their seat in classroom or other situations in which remaining seated is expected Difficulty playing in leisure activities quietly Talks excessively Impulsivity Blurts out answers before questions are completed Had a difficulty waiting their turn Often interrupts or intrudes on others A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A CHILD WITH ADHD 5:30 AM "Corey," a ten year old 5th grader, wakes up early after a long night of restless sleep. His mother repeatedly tells him to get ready for school, but he doesn't because he is too busy looking for his Gameboy that he thought he put on the table the night before. 7:00 AM After finally getting ready for school, Corey begins walking to school because he lives only a few blocks away. As he walked towards school he saw a squirrel that caught his attention. He followed the squirrel until he saw a butterfly, then when the butterfly got away, he stopped and picked up a shiny rock that he would eventually throw. The rock hit a tree with a low branch. He climbed the tree so he could watch the birds. 9:30 AM Corey's mom gets a call wondering why he is not at school. She finds him still in the tree. His mom gave him a long lecture about not going to school, to which he did not particularly listen to. 10:00 AM When he gets into class, his teacher asks him to hand in the homework that was due that morning. It was too bad, Corey didn't have his homework. His teacher was very used to this situation. During the lessons, Corey continued not to listen to his teacher and was annoying the students around him because he was constantly playing with his pencil and hitting it on the desk. 11:30 AM Corey usually sits by himself at lunch because he doesn't have many friends. Corey wants friends, but he can not seem to not butt into other people's conversations. 12:30 PM After lunch, Corey is determined to pay attention during class. He actually listens to the teacher's lesson! However, when the teacher reviews the lesson she starts asking questions. Corey is eager to answer each one and begins shouting out answers, wrong answers, to unfinished questions. He gets reprimanded by his teacher. OK OK OK I'm sure you are getting the gist of the story. Corey is inattentive, hyperactive, and impulsive. You may be wondering: "Why isn't this child on medication?" That's a good question. Speaking of Medication...
