Monday--meet on teusday Dennett Ch. 1 + 2 Leiber 1st session Thursday Houser ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------Nagel -Mysterian -we cant know if materialism is true because... -we can't explain consciousness -we would need to explain experience to someone who had never had it, so that they fully understood it -e.g. color to a blind man Phenomenology -study of experience -merleaus-ponty, sartre, husserl Chalmers -reductionists are wrong and mysterians are wrong -Easy Problem: How do we do stuff? -objective mechanics of the cognitive system -Hard Problem: why is there consciousness? what is it? -answering the easy problem leaves the hard problem unsolved -mary the neuroscientist -knows everything about brain, never had experiences -shows that conscious experience can't be deduced from facts about the functioning of the brain -do we need to be able to deduce consciousness from "brain facts" in order to know or explain it -i.e. show that consciousness necessarily follows from the working of brains (like ours). -otherwise we must be duelists -a
