Deborah Menasha March 30, 2008 Astronomy 100 Min Yun Extra credit Exploring the Sun Wheel Last week I visited the sun wheel on campus and was really amazed as the big rocks and how they were placed . These stones which are from Chester Granite Quarry Co . in East Otis, Massachusetts were put together during November of 2000 . The simplest purpose of the sun wheel seems to be to tell what time of day it is depending upon where the shadows from the great rocks are cast . There are many huge stones at this site each ranging from three to five tons . The stones are strategically placed with the directions of north, north east, east, south east, south, south west, west, and northwest . The stones are lined up with the sun at certain important times of the year . There are four solstice stones that show where the sunrise and the sunset are for the winter and summer solstice . There are also four moon stones . These moon stones show where the moonrise and moonset in specific directions . Of course there are also the main directional stones of north, south, east, and west .
