# ## # Scott M. Welch Mrs. Jan Sorrells English 1302 Saturday, Setember 12, 2003 Poor Sammy, I do not envy being nineteen again. This story definitely brought back some old, not too old, memories. It is amazing once you begin to analyze a story what you are able to gather from only a couple of pages worth of story telling. Mr. Updike brought Sammy to life through his thoughts, words and actions. He is a nineteen year old boy in every sense. From the way he characterizes his monotonous life at the A&P supermarket, to the way he fantasizes about Queenie and her life style. He has ambitions, but does not have a very guided path. He does know that he does not want to end up like Stokesie (married with two children at 22), but he is also aware that they are very similar people. As one reading this story can assume, so are many people in this particular town. Sammy mentions how the “sheep” are almost programmed to continue on the same no matter what happens. Not even setting “off dynamite” would jar these
