Averages There are three averages that can be used Mean Mode Median They are not always appropriate to every average calculation, and care must be taken to use the most suitable for the task.
Averages Mean using a list of values x x 10 5 50 N x x Add up all the values and divide by the number of values in the list 10 14 8 6 12 50 This can be affected by outliers, which distort the mean. If this is the case, the data may be such that you can ignore the outlier and work with the remaining figures.

8 1 8 15 2 30 8 3 24 6 3 18 10 1 10 10 90 Averages Mean using a frequency distribution The individual numbers can not be used in this case. The frequency has to be taken into account. x f fx f fx 9 10 90 f fx x The sum of all of the numbers (fx) is divided by the number of values (f)
Averages Mean using a grouped distribution This is slightly more complicated because we have to consider the upper and lower boundaries of the group in order to find a mid interval value to use in the calculations. Once the mid interval value has been found, this is treated the same way as the x value in a frequency distribution, and the procedure is as shown before.

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

Kiran Temple University Fox School of Business ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
