Stefan Doughty Instructor: Kristin Shearlock English 102 11 February 2008 Summary of “Euthanasia in Europe: a morbid debate” In a November 2003 article entitled “Euthanasia in Europe: a morbid debate”, English lecturer, Dr. Kevin Yuill questions the morality of the wave of pro-euthanasia taking place in Europe. First, Yuill tells the story of 22-year-old Vincent Humbert’s death at the hands of his mother, who used sedatives to euthanize her quadriplegic son. Yuill says that Vincent had just finished writing a book called “I Ask for the Right to Die” that he communicated to his mother using his thumb to write out each word. The president of France at the time refused Vincent’s personal letter asking the president to let him die, according to Yuill. Yuill says that Vincent’s mother was arrested for taking his life, despite the overwhelming support to legalize euthanasia in Europe since 2002. According to Yuill, the Netherlands has legalized euthanasia and has extended its legal boundary to 12-year-old to 18-year-old people, with parental association. A
