The Gods Must Be Crazy lecture Anthropology - study of humans through their culture, language, biology, and past remains - Anthropology is holistic------ it is concerned with all humans at all times and with all dimensions of humanity - Franz Boaz- founder of American anthropology Origins of Anthropology - Became an organized university discipline in the 19 th century - European “anthropologists” studied societies that were colonized or were about to be colonized - Salvage ethnography - practice of salvaging a record of what was left of a culture before it disappears - Europeans considered “others” to be barbaric and uncivilized Subfields of Anthropology- (Physical, Cultural, Linguistic, Archaeology) - Physical Anthropology - study of primate behavior, human evolution, and population genetics - Cultural Anthropology- study of cultures of living peoples (still in existence) o Strong emphasis on fieldwork o Fieldwork- living among social group being studied for a period of time, anthropologist lives with people for at least one year.
