The Age of Jefferson, 1800-1816 Jefferson’s Presidency : - Followed Hamilton’s Financial Plan - Carried out the neutrality policies of Washington and Adams - Supported (as a Republican) a limited central government. - He reduced the size of the military, eliminated a number of federal jobs, repealed the excise taxes (Whiskey), and lowered the national debt. - Suspends the Alien and Sedition Acts and releases those jailed under them - Goes on an impeachment campaign The Louisiana Purchase - Napoleon loses interest in land because: o He needed to concentrate French resources on fighting England o A rebellion led by Toussaint l’ Ouverture against French rule on the island of Santo Domingo had resulted in heavy French losses. - Spain closes down the New Orleans ports to Americans o Jefferson fears to retaliate, in fright of mingling in European affairs - Jefferson sends ministers to negotiate with France for New Orleans and a strip of Florida - France, needing founds for war, offers the Louisiana Territory for $15 million. - Lewis and Clark travel through the Louisiana Territory Case of Marbury vs. Madison (1803) - John Marshall is Chief Justice of Supreme Court - Jefferson wanted to block the Federalist appointments made at the last minute by John Adams. - Jefferson orders Secretary of State, James Madison, to not deliver the commissions to those Federalist judges whom Adams appointed. -
