Unformatted text preview: POL 378 Review #2 Chile (Nixon) Three-way presidential race in 1970 Both the CIA and KGB spent much money influencing the election. Prior to this, Chilean right-wing did not run candidate so center would win. They changed this and Salvador Allende (left) won with 36% of the votes. Salvador Allende Ran in election in 1952 (5%), 1958(almost wins, right concerned), and 1964(right supports centrist). Won election of 1970 and was not favored by U.S because of his policies. He nationalized copper, raised wages, lowered prices, and nationalizes banks. He loses favor from vested powers and even constitutents because they waited so long for a leftist ruler and they had outlandish demands to be met. Overthrew in coup of 1973 (September 11) by Agusto Pinochet due to falling copper prices and massive inflation. Chilean Constitution First written in 1925 but rewritten in 1980 by Pinochet.
