I will not ask you to label any diagrams on the exam. Chapter 2: * Distinguish between the Central and Peripheral Nervous Systems. What are the two parts of the Peripheral Nervous System and what do they control? What are the roles of the Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Systems? * What are the main structures of the neuron and what is the purpose of each? * What is a neuron’s “resting potential”, as opposed to its “action potential”? Define “refractory period”. * What happens at the synapse (or synaptic cleft)? * What role do neurotransmitters play as chemical messengers in the brain? Be familiar with the main types of neurotransmitters that we discussed in class (i.e., acetylchline, dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin). * What role do endorphins play as chemical messengers in the brain? Why are they sometimes called “neuromodulators”? * What is the function of the endocrine system? What type of chemical messengers does it release? What two structures work together to control activity in the endocrine system?
