Complete a PICO(T) search on bicycle safety. What does the research say about this issue? Select one of the articles from your search. Identify the descriptive statistics. Is anything missing? To what extent are minorities included in the study? (Is that demographic information available?) How does the descriptive data help you understand the research? I- Wear helmet C- Those who do not wear a helmet O- Have less injuries T- Over a 1 year period [1] What does the research say about this issue? According to the research wearing a helmet can significantly reduce the risk of head injuries in a bicyclist. Head injuries rank among the most severe injuries in bicyclists. They represent 20% to 40% of all of the bicycling injuries encountered in the Canadian emergency departments (ED). Helmets are estimated to reduce the risk of head and brain injuries by 69% (Hagel & Yanchar, 2013). [2] Select one of the articles from your search. Identify the descriptive statistics. Is anything missing? To what extent are minorities included in the study? (Is that demographic information available? Reasons why not?) The article that I have chosen from my research is titled “Bicycle helmet use in Canada: The need for legislation to reduce the risk of head injury.” Some of the descriptive statistics in this study are; bicycle related injuries among children and youth account for 4% of all injuries encountered in the ED, 7% of all hospital admissions for unintentional injury for those younger than 15, is the 5 th leading cause of child and youth hospitalization, helmets reduce the risk of head and brain injuries by 69%, reduce severe brain injuries by 74%, and reduce facial injuries by 65%. One thing that this study is lacking is it does not mention minorities being used or included. The only demographic data available is male and female adult and child cyclist (Hagel & Yanchar, 2013).
