History Two Exam Three 3-5-08 World War I 1914-1916 -On July 29 1914 Austria started to shell Belgrade -German foreign Minister Theobold Von Bethmann-Hollweg -Wanted war so it would purge Europe of its problems -He gave Vienna a “black check” of support -In Moscow Tsar Nicholas was feeling pressure by his people to do something to defend Serbia -Though if he mobilized his forces it would mean war -Confusion on who would do what came about, Germany thought Austria would defend Russia while Germany would defend Russia dealt with France -Though Austria thought that Germany would defend Russia and they would mess with Serbia -Russia Nicholas would order a partial mobilization of troops -He started to talk to this cousin the Kaiser to stop the political pressure to stop the mobilization, was known as the Willy/Nicky Telegrams -Partial mobilization would not work since the way the military structure was designed -On July 31 1914 there was an order of full mobilization Mobilization Plans -Germany chief strategist was Alfred von Schlieffen in the late 19
