History Two Exam Two 2-4-08 Latin America in the 19 th century -Most Latin American countries got independence in the 19 th century from their European countries -Latin American independence came form Enlightenment ideas in 18 th century -Early leaders in Latin American came to embrace liberty, equality, and fraternity -Most of the leaders felt they were sitting on a time bomb making them reluctant to empower the indians and metoizos Independence Movements Causes: -American Revolution 1776-1783 -The French Revolution 1789-1799 -Revolution on Haiti 1791-1804 -Slaves over throwing government -Napoleonic Wars in Iberia Mexico -1810 Napoleonic Wars spread to Spain -The Creoles in Spain colonies set up “Junta counis” to rule in the name of the king -In Mexico, Creoles wanted control of mexico -1810 Father Miguel de Hidalgo would enlist Indians and Metizos to fight the junta -Though he was captured and executed since his forces were defeated -The creoles would unite under Augustin de Iturbide in 1820 and wanted independence
