Ancestors lived in idyllic simple harmony until others came from Phoenicia and set up cities ii. Influencing major Greek culture peacefully b. Aryan i. People who lived in Greece originally lived civilized until hellions swept and dominated southerners ii. More forceful c. 1 st quarter of 19 th century people abandoned ancient model and took up Aryan model i. Not because Ancient model was inadequate ii. Ideological shift as a result of 4 major factors 1. Introduction of the idea of progress a. No one has ever denied that Egypt and Phoenicia older than Greece b. More people thought that because Egypt was older, it was better c. Greeks inferior because they came later d. Switch to the idea that later is better, therefore Greeks became better because they came after Egypt 2. Dominance of romanticism over enlightenment a. Romanticism = Belief in inadequacy of reason
