Lecture One Unit Five 11-30-07 Russia Forming religious and Political Traditions -Russia developed into a distinct civilization -It is the largest nation and 6 th with the most population -Most of it is flat except for the ural mountains -It is 1500 miles long Building of state structure -Rurik- leader of viking traders -In 862 he made a Dynasty in Novgorod but it was later moved to Kiev -Kiev attracted missions form the Byzantine Empire -The Christian Byzantine Empire became a model for Russia Eastern Orthodox Christianity -Was different from Western because western claimed to have control over everyone -While the eastern had no pope it had a patter of state control over churches -the Patriarch of Constantinope was the highest official in the Eastern Church but listened to the Emperor -Prince Vladimir sent mission to Europe to observe there religious crap -He converted to Eastern Orthodox and made his people do the same -By doing that it lead to the Christianization of Russia
