Lecture Seven Unit Three 11-2-07 Ming Dynasty -Founder was Ming Taizu -He was the second to found a major chinese dynasty -Born into a poor family, at 16 his family died -He presented himself to a buddha monastery they sent him way then he came back but then it was burned by the mongols -He joined the rebels against the mongols -Married the daughter of the rebel leader -Became rebel leader -The rebels drove the Mongols out of China -He then founded the Ming Dynasty-”bright” -Moved capital to Nanjing -The rulers wanted to place the Mongols under military control -Then moved capital back to Beijing to keep an eye on the Mongols -For a long time solutions to Mongols/Nomadic invasions they had build defense(Great Wall) -Great wall was a Ming project, it was 1500 miles long and 30 to 50ft high -Jiayu Pass was the Western Point while Shanhai Pass was the Eastern Pass Potential for Radical Change-Seven Voyages -Zheng He -Son of Chines Muslims born in SW China, descendent of a Mongol -At 10 he was captured and recruited into the Ming army
