Lecture Five 9-28-07 Primary religious traditions -Christian institutions came about -At first christianity was a minority -After collapse of Western Roman Empire, christianity provided cultural unity of Europe -Over several centuries christianity evolved from beliefs to beliefs plus fundamental christian institutions -The institutions under went changes and the churches were headed by bishops -Four bishops had more power than the others Rome, Jerusalem, Alexandria, and Antioch -Though Rome had the most power -The Roman had more power because Peter was it at one point and was given the keys to heaven -The Roman Bishops went to becoming a Pope -Most christian accepted the Roman bishop as head -Though the popes power aka bishop continued to grow Gregory the Great 590-604 -He contributed to the Popenish and shit -He started out as a good student -A neighboring state threaten to invade Rome and the Italian Peninsula -The Italian Peninsulas defense were weak -So he mobilized the resources to defend Rome -He assumed direction of Rome and territory of cities around Rome -By doing that it gave the Pope a source of political authority -That area of rome and surrounding cities became known as The Papal States, 754-1870 -Gregory laid the foundation of the Papal States Rise of Monasticism aka Monasteries -It came about because of the conditions of the medieval times -The Dark Ages gave rise to Monasticism -It helped people individually to achieve salvation -At first each Monastery followed its own rules -Then Benedict of Nursia 480-547 came about -He came up with the Benedictine Rule
