Lecture Five Unit Three 11-05-07 Song Dynasty -Was important because of its classical traditions that took shape during it -Defining Characteristics of Traditional Chinese Civilation -Absolute Monarchy -Central Bureaucratic System of government -Governing Elite Consisting of Scholar-Officials -Civil Service Examination System -Neo-Confucianism Exsistence -960 competing Dynasty, its ruler learned about an invasion by nomadic people -They called a meeting and sent Song Taizu who was the military leader to go and stop it -On there march to it they stopped at Chen Bridge and the soldiers made him emperor by giving him a yellow robe -He started the Song Dynasty -It lasted a long time until mongols invaded it -The nomadic people were a constant threat to it -To prevent another mutiny 1)He invited all the generals that took place in the first one to come to a party and persuaded them to retire 2)The Song rulers regularized a civil service examination Expanding Primary Institutional -Civil Service Examination -System of Official examination and recruitment that recruited government officials -The exam system was a defined primary tradition in China Origins of System -It can be traced back to the Han Dynasty -Students who passed confusion exams would go on to hold government office -It was then replaced by a system of recommendation called the Nine-Ranks -A local person would rank people from one to nine one each on holding a high position then the other
